You’ve probably told yourself some version of this: *”Once I feel more confident, I’ll finally go after that promotion.”* Or *”When I believe in myself more, I’ll start that business, ask that question, have that conversation.”*
Here’s the truth I share with almost every client who walks through my door: confidence doesn’t arrive first. It’s not a feeling you wait to receive before you act. It’s a byproduct of action, something you build, one small brave moment at a time.
Confidence Is a Muscle, Not a Mood
Think about the last time you got genuinely good at something…. riding a bike, public speaking, cooking a new dish, negotiating a raise. Were you confident before you started? Almost certainly not. You were confident *after* you did it enough times that your nervous system learned it was survivable.
Confidence is evidence-based. Your brain doesn’t trust affirmations nearly as much as it trusts proof. And proof only comes from doing the thing.
This is why waiting to “feel ready” keeps so many capable people stuck. Readiness is a feeling manufactured by repetition, not a prerequisite for starting.
The Confidence-Action Loop
Here’s the cycle that actually works:
1. **Take a small, slightly uncomfortable action.**
2. **Survive it.** (You almost always do.)
3. **Your brain logs new evidence:** *I can handle this.*
4. **Confidence ticks up, just slightly.**
5. **Repeat, with a slightly bigger action.**
Notice that action comes *first* in this loop, not last. If you’re waiting for step 5’s feeling before you’re willing to do step 1’s action, you’ll wait forever. The loop simply doesn’t run in that order.
What This Means for You Today
If you’re waiting to feel confident before you make the call, send the pitch, set the boundary, or apply for the role, flip the order. Act first, in the smallest version of the action you can manage. Let the confidence show up afterward, as the natural consequence of having proven something to yourself.
You don’t need to feel ready. You need to feel willing. Those are very different, and only one of them is required to start.
**A question to sit with:** What’s one small action you’ve been postponing until you “feel more confident”? What would it look like to do a scaled-down version of it today, before that feeling arrives?
That’s where confidence actually begins.
